There are times in life when you will feel like quiting. Sometimes the pressure from everything surrounding you can weigh you down to such a degree that you give up hope that things will change. These are the times that make us stronger and fortify our resolve. One of the hardest things to do is hang in there, but it is necessary. There are more people watching you than you know and a lot of what they will be inspired to do will stem from you. You have to face your fears. There will be periods where the initial outcome will not be pleasant, but you will reap huge rewards in the long run if you stay the course and don't throw in the towel.

I don't know if you noticed, but 2012 is already moving pretty quick. Many of us have made resolutions, set goals, and made plans to improve our situation. My goal through this post is just to encourage you to stay on the path you have started. Don't be like most people who quit between late January and early February. Stay diligent in what you are working on. Your dreams, goals, and visions are not going to accomplish themselves. Keep going until you develop a rhythm and then that rhythm will work for you. You'll knock out your bite sized goals (leading to the bigger ones) in your sleep. Then at the end of the year, what was once formidable is now attainable. Hang in there!

Harnessing Your Passion To Produce Something Worthwhile (The Steve Jobs Factor)

Would you consider yourself a passionate person? Is there something that fires you up and gets your engine going? Good, this is for you then. Often times we let this valuable passion (or intense desire) go to waste or use it in a destructive manner. Passion can lead to great accomplishment if it is channelled the right way. You can chose to let it be fuel for you creativity or let it just flicker and fizzle out through passionate talk that amounts to nothing. I've learned a huge lesson in harnessing my passion. Don't talk about it, or at least don't let my passion flow out all at once through my speech, especially if the audience probably wont take it and run with it. We often express our passions through conversations, social media, etc. and fail to produce something tangible. Most times, you are losing thunder when you just blab about what you want to do or how strongly you feel about a particular subject (don't get me wrong,I love using social media to convey my thoughts). Take it one step further, write an article or a book, start a peer group, create a product, or whatever else you can think of to show how passionate you are. Don't just talk about it, most people will forget what you say anyway. Make your passion count for something that will last and improve your life and those around you.

I recently had a friend of mine hit me up and ask me about marriage, I thought that there may be other people who can benefit from this and decided to share my response. See the question and answer below.

"Sharp, thanks for sharing your blog on 'the artistry of marriage'. I've had a lot of pastors, family, and trusted friends give me advice on Marriage and how to prepare, but I'd love to hear from you in a little more in depth.

Here is my question: As a 21-year old, what can I be doing right now - in my singleness - to be best preparing for marriage? I would love to hear your thoughts on this."

Answer: I can't act like I got this perfect when I was single, but one thing that I did to prepare for marriage was try to forget about it and focus on where I was headed in life. So many people become so consumed on when and who they will marry that they are distracted from doing what they are called to while single. With that said though, I also begin to read books and other material on relationships and how to have successful ones, not just marriage (though that was included and a main area of interest for me). Lastly, I was sort of mentored unknowingly by a young married couple. They allowed me to hang around them even as a single young man and shortly after I found my wife. The biggest and most important thing you can do right now is deepen your relationship with God, get a vision for your life, and begin to move toward it. Hope that helps a bit.

Matt Reeves is an emcee from Staten Island, New York who has been on the grind for a good minute and he is catching fire! He is a blend of underground conscience, street savvy, college education, and urban pop culture all rolled into one. He has been making waves on the Internet with his most recent offering "4 The Love Of Hip Hop", which has been getting a lot of love from the Source Magazine, DJbooth.net, and a host of other major hip hop music outlets. He sat down with us recently to discuss his new album, creative process, advice to new artists, and the importance of handling your business. Matt Reeves is well on his way to being a huge influential force in hip hop. Take note and check out the interview below.

RF: Tell me about Matt Reeves the man, what makes you you?

Matt: This may sound super corny but what makes me me is that I'm not afraid to be me. A lot of rappers aren't comfortable in their own skin so they need the lifestyle of being a rapper to make them feel comfortable. They use the lifestyle and the music to attract all the things they were afraid to pursue as regular joes. As for myself; I embrace fear, insecurities and other raw emotions through my music while I pursue my dreams. I'm not afraid to talk about my shortcomings and I don't put on a show to save face. However it's not all about hard times and woe is me either.

RF: You have a very unique approach to your music. Tell me how your sound came to be what it is?

Matt: As a kid everyone around me from the adults to my older siblings all embraced music with a purpose. So, from Gil Scott Heron to Poor Righteous teachers I was being fed music in a different way. A lot of people think I don't curse in my music because of my spiritual beliefs but it's not that at all. But that actually stems from my mother's challenge to say something meaningful and learn how to express myself without taking a short cut. To be honest, I'm not against people who do, it's just this is where I am creatively.

RF:What motivates you to create the type of music you make?

Matt: The motivation behind the music I make is life itself. I think art should reflect life, not the other way around. Some people may feel like my music is more on the emo side because of the subject matter but if you listen close I never address an issue without offering hope. A lot of time that hope is left up to you the listener to decide how to handle it. One person might hear my song and decide to speak to their neighbor for the first time, somebody else might hear that same song and decide to start a non profit organization. Knowing that I have that type power in my hands I take it very serious and that motivates me to make the music I make and to be responsible with the gift I've been given.

RF: From what I have seen and heard from you, you have a cold business acumen. How does your business side affect your creative side? How do you use the business side to your advantage?

Matt: Sometimes the business side plays more of a role then I'd like it to. This entire industry is all about relationships. Your net worth is determined by your network. As the Internet gives every bitter person with an opinion the opportunity to be a critic, the net also gives anyone with a pulse the opportunity to be famous but on the flip side once you hit that stride it takes off at a much faster pace. So the appearance is that it's easy to "get on" now. But how I use this to my advantage is that I've learned not to get too attached to the music. It's a business and even though these songs are personal when they're created initially, it's still just a product so you can't take it personal when someone doesn't feel you or your song and vice versa you can't let it go to your head when they do feel you and your music because you're just a product. You could be here today and gone tomorrow so you better have some other ideas set in place for that music money because you may not always make money off of music. It's like hooping, what are you gonna do if you tear your ACL or have a career ending injury? Everyone can't be a commentator on ESPN. You have to have another plan, you have to Magic Johnson the game. That's why I admire dudes like E40. Most people see the rapper, I see the real estate mogul and owner of a chain of Fat Burgers. Music is just the platform to get it all started.

RF: Tell me about your latest project, For The Love of Hip Hop, and how that came to be?

Matt: People don't know this and I probably shouldn't even tell you this but you're my brother so I'll spill the beans. The bulk of 4 The Love of Hip Hop maybe 7 songs or so was created in less then 2 weeks, the other 5 songs were songs that I had in the stash that were going to be a part of other projects that just didn't pan out the way I planned, so in an attempt to get something out there and keep my name alive I had to go with why I do this music in the first place. Most of that music was written on the train on my way to the studio. I think we did two or three 3 hours sessions and we were done. Plus keep in mind there's a gang of songs that didn't make the cut. I just wanted to do something that spoke volumes about this culture that I love so much. 90% of my good memories have multiple hip hop songs attached to them. My entire character as an artist comes from Chubb Rocks' "Treat Em Right". If you look close at my album cover and you know hip hop, you'll notice it's all native tongue. S/O my man @Street_Evan he's the only one who openly caught that.

RF:What advice would you give to upcoming artists?

Matt: I would tell any artist to first make the music that is true to yourself. You have more in common with your listener then you think. I'd rather fail as Matt Reeves then to succeed as some other dude I don't even recognize. Second, be about your business and be early to meetings.
Say what you mean and mean what you say. Learn the business you want to be a part of, you don't have to be a master of the industry, just have a basic understanding of how things work and lastly take care of your people. If people take the time out of their personal lives to make time to listen to your songs the least you can say is thank you. Besides there's a benefit behind that mindset as well, it's called Pareto's Law or the 80/20 rule. 80% of your new fans will come from 20% of your existing ones so take care of your people!

RF: Where will Matt Reeves be at in 2 years?

Matt: In 2 years I hope to be 2 years into whatever deal I've signed with whatever company chooses to believe in me. Maybe Pharrell's I Am Other, G Note, Rostrum, Deacon, Duck Down, Fools Gold who knows. I also hope that at that point I will have had an extremely successful Indie career. I also hope that very soon my tour schedule allows me to do this music full time. Thanks for the opportunity to talk to the people you could've chose anyone. Honoring My Incredible Grandmother

This past Friday, I received a phone call around 5am. I took a deep breath before I answered knowing that these calls usually don't end well. I got the message that Henrietta Phillips, my 92 year old grandmother, went home to be with the Lord. I remembered talking to her earlier that week and she sounded good (my grandmother was still sharp even in her old age). We talked about music (she hated rap, but loved mine lol), marriage, her students (she was a classical piano teacher), and the book she was working on. My grandmother didn't leave anything on the plate. She was still very active in her church, her business, and family. She could have easily passed for 70 years old. I know 50 year old people who don't get around as well as she did.

So I write this with a bit of disbelief that my beloved "granny" is gone. She leaves such a rich legacy and I am so happy that she gets to be with God now without any hindrance. My grandfather, Harold Phillips, is still here and he is the strongest man I know. He is truly the model of a godly man as he still upholds our family through this difficult transition. I'm pretty sure my grandmother won't be reading this, perhaps this is more so for me, but I want to make sure that I acknowledge her accomplishments. She was an author, singer, song writer, musician, teacher, first lady, mother, sister, aunt, friend, great grandmother, and confidant. Her mind was like a map, she could tell you how to get to any destination within the country without looking at a Thomas Guide. I will greatly miss my granny and I will honor her by being the best that I can be and help make this world a little bit better after I'm gone, like she did.

Hone In On Your Creative Edge

People who have come to uncover their creativity can be some of the most unfocused people on the planet. I can speak from such a point of view because I can be one of them. I have so many ideas that it would be impossible to pursue them all. It has gotten to the point where I have an idea folder in my phone and I just jot down my free flowing ideas and revisit them. I have found (in my limited experience) that it is important to hone in on (or focus on) what I'm most passionate about and give the majority of my energy to that. This allows me to complete my goal and put out something of exceptional quality. Whatever you are pursuing, hone in on one element of it and kill it. Maximize your current endeavor and then move on to the next project. You will have less stress and frustration, and gain satisfaction from finishing the job.

Are You Sleeping on Your Creativity?

I recently tried to take a nap the other day and felt that still, small, voice say, "you need to get up and work". I instantly shrugged it off, rolled over, and commenced trying to catch some shut eye. The voice again said, "you need to get up and work, you are missing out on creativity". That was enough to get me up and start punching away on my laptop. As I write this, I wonder how many people are sleeping on their creativity. Maybe not literally sleeping, but not doing their part to put the creative energy within them to work. I don't ever want to miss an opportunity to get into my creative zone and produce something that is new, exciting, and perhaps will change some one's life. Every time we let our laziness, fear, ignorance, or other vices keep us from tapping into our creative potential, we do ourselves and the world a terrible disservice. So go create something!

The Artistry of Marriage

Sometimes I can feel my heart get extremely lonely on this journey called life. Perhaps you too have had the feeling that you are all alone even though you are around several other people. Feelings like this make me so appreciative to have another person who I can share my joys, dreams, fears, insecurities, and ultimate success with. I realize how unbalanced I could become if I didn't have someone to compliment me. Though there are struggles, ups, and downs, nothing can compare to having someone (going in the same direction) to journey with on this side of eternity. I've heard it said that to stay married is a skill, but to become happily married and stay that way is an art. Well, the latter is what I'm after.

You Don't Know What You Are Made Of Until You Are Tested

It's easy to be a star football player from the comfort of your couch. We know everything that the guy on the field is doing wrong and if he would just do what we command (with our chips and beer in hand), he would win the game. I'm afraid that the game is a lot different when you are actually on the field. I'm sure we would all develop a little more humility once we took a helmet to the rib cage and had our faces shoved into the turf. Then reality sets in, perhaps this wasn't as easy as I thought it was we think to ourselves. Time out! The fact is that we don't know what we are capable of until we are placed into the crucible of life. Testing brings out the real us, comfort does not. See how you react to the worst that life has offer or accept the seemingly beneficial challenges that it presents in order to see what is really on the inside. Once you conquer that situation, then you have bragging rights and new authority, but until you actually live through and pass certain courses in the school of life, don't assume you are ready to be on the field.

Believer's in Christ eventually come to understand that there are significant "death" points in their life. We either have the choice to undergo these periods of death allowing the resurrection life of Jesus to flow through us, or we can choose to take the easy route and let our human nature continue to live and abort the plan of God in our lives for that moment. Some death points and periods are bigger and have greater magnitude than others. The little "deaths' that we die daily prepare us for our big death that we will face that will give life to many others. The joy set before us that allows us to undergo these deaths is all of the lives that will be touched for the better by our obedience to God.

Inner Transformation Leads to External Transformation

Many people are often focused on how they can transform their sphere of influence. We want to see positive transformation in our families, on our jobs, in our churches, and in our communities. Positive transformation is progressive in nature, there are building blocks that lead to greater levels. To change a city, family, community, the individual must change first. The very things that you desire to see shifted in your respective spheres of activity must first shift in you. A transformation in you will allow you to see what needs to transform in your surroundings and will give you authority to work on initiating the change, you are working from a place of integrity. So get busy transforming the spehre of responsibility assigned to you by God, but remember that first step starts with you undergoing that tranformation.

Sharp Skills Comes Out on Top in 2011 Battle of The Beats!!!

Sharp Skills with family, friends, and supporters after the battle

"God did it again", said Sharp Skills to his wife with a big smile on his face after he was announced the winner of the 2011 Battle of the Beats at Cal State Long Beach on September 22nd. There were 14 emcees brave enough to step up to the challenge to lyrically assault one another until there was only one left standing. First round: Sharp got to work quickly on his opponent and didn't waste any time proving his lyrical caliber. After the completion of the first round, all the emcees who were to be eliminated were called up to the stage and Sharp was one of them. "Wait a minute, wait a minute, there has been a mistake", said Corion Lucas, the host of the battle, "Sharp Skills was not eliminated, there was a mix up", he asserted. Sharp took a deep sigh of relief and took his seat with the remaining survivors. Second round: Sharp dismantled his opponent and stated "You don't even know who I am in the Spirit, you not battling your average dude" to the challenger on the other microphone.

Tie breaker round: The judges decided to have Sharp Skills do a tie breaker match with another emcee who had the same score as him, the loser would be eliminated from the competition. Sharp did not do as strong in this round as he did in the one prior, but the judges saw fit to let him proceed to the next round. Third round: Sharp was back to himself and was able overcome his opponent by engaging the crowd. Sharp Skills would move on to the final round to battle Mayhem One. Final round: Mayhem One lets off a tirade of verbal assaults on the cool and collected Sharp Skills. Mayhem One scrunched his face as he used his extensive vocabulary violently to prove he was the champion and should be respected as such. Sharp did not appear to be fazed and started his rhyme with asking God for strength and then said "You are scaring me, you really need some therapy" and he made reference to other psychological disorders Mayhem One appeared to have as the crowd watched in delight. After the final round Corion Lucas announced that the crowd was going to be the judge. "Yall give it up for Mayhem One", said Lucas and the audience gave a strong round of applause. "Yall give it up for Sharp Skills" and the crowd erupted in a frenzy, especially Sharp's Antioch family who came out to support him in intimidating numbers. It was clear who the victor was. "Wait a minute, I'm hearing that the crowd wants another round to prove who the winner is" said Lucas as many in the crowd were holding up two fingers indicating their desire to see a second clash. Mayhem One got more aggressive and begin to release his lyrical prowess with extreme force, even saying Sharp had a misconception of God (Sharp had referenced God and his faith for much of the battle). Sharp told the crowd "Its time to take it home". A side came out of Sharp that many had not seen before in the battle as he marched right up to Mayhem One's face saying "I can show you how to be a man" confidently. It got a little heated when Sharp touched Mayhem One's wrist and Mayhem One said "Don't touch me, don't touch me". Sharp backed up, but continued to go even harder lyrically and when he knew he had finished the job, he turned to the crowd, who by this time were up on there feet encouraging him as he demolished his final opponent. "Our winner for the 2011 Battle of the Beats is Sharp Skills", said the host and the crowd erupted.
According to Sharp Skills, the highlight of the night was seeing his family in there and the fact that he was used to impact Cal State Long Beach for the Kingdom. "I thank God for this victory, I really could not have done it without Him, I mean that" was Sharp's response when asked how he felt about the winning during the post battle interview.

Overcoming Insecurity

Insecurity is something that plagues us all from time to time, some more than others. Insecurity, like fear, is something that you may not always be able to alleviate, but it is something that can be managed so that you aren't paralyzed from realizing your greatness. Insecurity shows itself usually in one of two ways, either over confidence or self depreciation. You will usually know if you are in an insecure frame of mind if you find yourself over compensating or if you are always criticizing yourself internally. Insecurity can be dangerous when it causes you to: over extend yourself, try to destroy others who are confident, not go after what you are meant for, and treat yourself like you are worthless. These are all extreme cases, but the realities of many people nonetheless. Insecurity is something that may need to be conquered on a day to day basis depending on how severe and entrenched the condition is. So what are some practical ways to overcome insecurity?
1) Know what your strengths are and operate in them. If you aren't sure what your strengths are, ask a few people that you know will tell you the truth. Be sure to write them down and look at them everyday to remind yourself. Play to these strengths and develop them. Accept assignments and roles that will allow you to use your strengths.
2) Admit your weaknesses. The trick here is not to dwell on the weaknesses, but to be aware of them.
3) Stay in your lane. We can often fall into insecurity if we focus our energy on what someone else does better than us. The key is to appreciate the gifts/strengths of others, but play your game the way you play it, even if someone is better at it than you are (there is always someone better).
4) Realize that there is no one like you. Sure others may have some of the same qualities that you do, but no one has the same unique mixture of gifts, talents, abilities, skills, and experiences that you do.
5) Hang around people that appreciate and affirm you.
6) Sow good words and deeds into the lives of as many people as you can and as often as you can.

Sharp Skills Knocks It Out The Park At The 2011 Merge Summit Showcase!!!

Sharp Skills handled his business at the 2011 Merge Summit showcase this past Friday, August 19th. Sharp stood confidently as he performed "Strength", a song off his forthcoming album Anno Rebelio, in front of a panel of judges and a packed house of showcase attendees. No band, no DJ, no hype man, it was just Sharp Skills with a microphone and he commanded the stage and gave the crowd something to yell for as he declared that he remains strong despite the various adversities life brings his way. Dressed in all black, with eyes veiled behind dark sunglasses, Sharp showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Los Angeles music scene and he can hold his own with little to no musical accompaniment. The judges (industry heads) had nothing but positive feedback as they critiqued his performance. Mali Music, one of the judges said "Very hip hop, very dope" and another judge said "I can tell that you take what you do very serious and that you are not just rapping this, but living it too". A very influential leader whispered to Sharp afterwards, "You are the hottest thing out and we need to get this music out there". With another huge notch under his belt, it is safe to say that Sharp Skills is well on his way to success.

Unlocking Your Creative Potential

People are designed to create. If you are not creating something (even if that something is boring algorithms), then chances are you are not fulfilled in your life. Some people are more aware of their creative side and some just have freakishly apparent manifestations of creativity that they can produce (music, art, poetry, the usual suspects). But I sincerely believe that even if you are not an "artist" per se, there is still a canvas within your sphere of influence that only your unique set of "paint brushes" can make a masterpiece out of. Perhaps you work in corporate America and crunch numbers all day, your creative genius may allow you to invent a new way of acquiring and/or disseminating that information to/for your stake holders that doesn't bore them/you to death. Maybe you are a stay at home mom and you construct a witty system that allows you to operate your home more efficiently. Whatever space you occupy is a frontier all its own to be creatively conquered. Don't place limits on your potential, no matter what role you have in life. Always look for ways to improve, refine, and innovate. Use some of that good old brain power to imagine possibilities rather than confinements. Those who hone their creative potential will be the ones who influence culture the most in the not so distant future.

The Dark Side of Being Driven

Being driven is widely viewed in society as something positive and to be admired, I agree, but as someone who is very driven himself, I also see the potential harm in this quality if not managed properly. Driven individuals, such as myself, can have the tendency to charge toward a goal no matter the cost even if it causes harm to both themselves and those close to them. If you are very driven/ambitious, you must work hard to couple this trait with patience and accept the advice of others (even when it doesn't feel good). Ask those closest to you if you are making room for them and allowing them to be a part of your plans. It takes discipline, diligence, and determination to realize your greatness because so much of the world's system is dedicated to confining it, making you manageable and neutralizing the impact God desires for you to have. So you have to makeup in your mind that you will stay the course of uncovering the treasures that are inside and helping others find the treasures within them, no matter the cost. Life is a waste if you don't become all that you are meant to be!!!

I hear a lot of people talk about how they want to do great things. That is something to admire because many people are content just being average and doing average things. It takes guts to talk about your desire to do great things, it takes even more guts to actually attempt to accomplish something great. Yet, the disconnect occurs when difficulty ensues as a result of going after something of value. Many of those who once talked about doing great things give up there pursuit altogether when obstacles come about. They bury their dreams when multiple obstacles occur. So this leads me to believe that people aren't as passionate about doing something great as they led on or they went after the wrong thing. That might sound harsh, but the reality is is that even if hell itself rises against you, it wont be able to hold you back from something you are dead set on accomplishing. If you don't have that type of motivation for what you are going after, then what you are pursuing isn't worth it. You are better off finding something that ignites a consistent flame within you and charge after that.

Sharp Skills on Stage At LBGF

This past Sunday, The R.E.B.E.L. Firm's own, Sharp Skills, blew the crowd away at the 3rd annual Long Beach Gospelfest. After Sharp Skills' mentor and pastor, Wayne Chaney Jr. introduced him, Sharp wasted no time in getting to work with his 4 piece band (Two of which have toured with Nas extensively). Sharp brought the heat with songs such as the crowd favorite "Business is Good", the newest ear candy "How Bout It", and the famous "Mountain Movement' (featured in the trailer for Takers). As the solo emcee introduced the Mountain Movement to the crowd of 1,000's, he exhorted them to not be afraid to be the top at what they do because "God is opening doors man", said Sharp Skills. The Long Beach Gospelfest also featured artists such as Mali Music, Kierra Sheard, Trinitee 5:7, and emerging star Myesha Chaney (Sharp's first lady). Soon after his performance, Sharp was sought out by Dr Holly Carter (manager of Deitrick Haddon, Kierra Sheard, Mali Music, and brainchild behind the Merge Summit), who said he did an excellent job and that she enjoyed his performance. He was also blessed to be interviewed by BET, HBN (Hosanna Broadcasting Network), and other respective media outlets. Sharp along with his wife, Menzelle, and a team of awesome supporters passed out over 900 promo Cd's to the hungry audience after his performance. The team wore "How Bout It" t-shirts designed by Sharp's wife and they were a big hit, even a politician's wife requested one. This event turned out highly successful for Sharp and provides only a glimpse of his super bright future.

The Long Beach Gospel Fest is slotted to pack in an estimated 10,000-15,000 people in beautiful Long Beach, California. Sharp Skills will be one of the artists to grace the stage. Sharp brings an infectious energy to his audience while articulating his rap lyrics in a manner where the listeners can both enjoy the music and understand what he is saying. The 26 year old emcee will be performing with a live band for a short but memorable set around 3:30 pm on July 10th. Fulfilling your purpose is no easy feat. In fact, most people don't, the same way the majority of people only tap into only about 10% of their brain power. When you choose to accomplish your purpose, you are signing up to go against the grain of society. Many systems are built on people being predictable and living an ordinary and purposeless life. Not only does one have to fight to remain motivated in spite of this fact, but also be able to navigate around our own tendency to just settle, especially if we hit some bumps in the road. I am a firm believer that if you realize what your true purpose is, you will weather the storms of adversity and persist right through them until you get to the envisioned end. Sometimes you have to take it one day at a time when you are not seeing the desired results. You have to be able to recognize and celebrate small victories and those will eventually turn into big ones.

This past weekend, some of my buddies and I decided to leave our humble abode in Long Beach and venture off to Hollywood to hang out. This was not a regular weekend in Hollywood, the BET Music Awards was happening simultaneously. As we passed by several scantly clad women and expensive cars, I begin to ask myself "Do you think you are ready for all of this?". Am I ready to be a light in this environment teeming with temptation around every corner. I am a firm believer that I am supposed to be used by God in this realm, but sometimes I wonder if I can be as strong in theses dark environments as I am when surrounded by other believer's in our little Christian bubbles. Well, God knows if I'm ready or not. What's crazy is I feel like I'm closer than I've ever been to "blowing up". Seriously, all it would take is the right connect, to be seen by the right person/people and my life would be dramatically altered forever. It's both a scary and an exciting thought. I guess we'll just see what happens.

Sharp Skills at Hastings Productions

What's up R.E.B.E.L.'s. I wanted to give you guys a quick update on how my new album Anno Rebelio is progressing. For about the past month I have been hard at work recording songs at Hastings Productions in Los Angeles. What was even harder work was finding the right studio to record this project at (thank God the search is over). So far, I have recorded four songs, so I'm about 1/3 of the way finished. Click here to see footage. I have also locked down an awesome engineer to mix and master the project, his name is Mike Verse Mills, he is also a talented emcee as well. This past weekend, I had a very successful album photo shoot with the very talented R. See. So there's quite a bit of positive momentum going. How To Destroy Your Haters in 30 Days or Less

I knew that title would get you (in English man accent)! This blog post is not about how to rid the earth of your enemies. I want to discuss the dysfunction that we have found ourselves in as it relates to this subject. Over this past week I have read numerous status updates via facebook, twitter, etc. regarding haters and the offended party's response to them. Have you ever wondered why people hate on one another in the first place? First, a definition is in order. To hate is to dislike intensely or passionately, or to feel extreme hostility towards. People who feel they are being "hated on" are in essence saying that they are intensely disliked and feel extreme hostility emanating from a person/group of people toward them. Newsflash---it is not a good thing to be on the receiving end of this interaction. What does hate of this sort stem from? More than likely, though debatable, it comes from the person (the hater) feeling dissatisfied with their current condition, yet not having the means, ability,courage, etc. to change their situation and thus improve upon it. Therefore, when they see another person (usually of similar origins) attempting to change their situation and showing signs of measurable progress, jealousy/envy is aroused in the person who lacks this power. As I have said before, this is a very natural occurrence and one that should be discounted as such. The dysfunction that I witness on a day to day basis are those who relish in the bliss (paradoxical) of being disliked intensely. It's really quite mad. This condition is generally seen in those who lack a healthy knowledge of self identity and awareness, thus they draw energy from others, even though it is negative (it is energy nonetheless to draw upon). We have fallen into a trap in this current population, to believe that it is a glorious feat to be the subject of an other's hostility due to our own progress. The correct mind to have as it relates to our "haters" is to seek ways to empower them so that they too may progress (should they elect to receive your assistance). Let's be honest, we have all been a "hater" at one point or another.

Killing the Critical Spirit

If you would be real with yourself, you've had a critical spirit (or attitude) before. I've had it and have recently dealt with it and hate it! A critical attitude is the essence of what we like to call "a hater". It's not cool to be a hater, nor does it feel good when we see that we are operating from this mindset. It usually comes when we see someone doing their thing, in front of people and being praised for it. We start thinking, I can do that better or we find every reason why their presentation sucks because we either lack the courage or ability to do it too. If you are like me, you hate being critical. It drains precious energy, creativity, relationships, opportunities, and dishonors God. So how do you deal with a critical spirit? You have to find your realm of influence and begin to work within it. A lot of the bad attitude comes from us having things/ideas we want to present, but feeling like we don't have permission to do so with a certain group of people. All of us have a realm of influence that we are made to reach and it can be frustrating when your influence isn't being utilized. If you find the place/people you are supposed to reach and step out and actually do it, then you won't deal with being critical as much. If you are pursuing your vision, then you won't have as hard of time supporting others in theirs because your mind will be too occupied with what you got going on! So take some time to find your realm of influence (or begin to operate in it once again if you already know what it is). Once you do, your face will brighten and your outlook on what others are doing won't be so negative.

Dying to Self

I have very recently entered into a phase of "life" where I am witnessing my own death. What I'm referring to is the death of my selfish will, mindset, and way of doing things. Dying is not a fun process but it is mandatory if you truly wish to be great. I have become acquainted with several leaders that are around the same age as me who are either just as sharp (no pun intended) or sharper then me.I'm not used to that. I am accustomed to being the HPIC (Head Person In Charge), but I've pretty much been assigned to the back seat. At first I was a little distraught over this, but I just came to realize how good this is for me. Also, being around other highly capable leaders will make me a better one. So I have been learning to shut my mouth and listen to others more, even humble myself to receive instruction from those the same age as me or younger (tough pill to swallow). God is allowing me to experience what others have experienced with me, at my job I am managing people twice my age (I know that's a bummer). Needless to say, I am becoming better through this dying process and will be ready to go hard after my flesh (worldly nature) is completely pulverized.

Whenever you are building something that is God inspired, you should expect opposition to come. Pastor Wayne Chaney said, "All great leaders have to learn how to function well through adversity". Trouble comes with the territory when you are about Kingdom Business. Even those that are not about Kingdom Business experience their share of problems when they are constructing something great to behold. One of the most difficult obstacles to get over is our natural emotions. We must learn to process our natural emotions from a supernatural perspective less we give in to a downward spiral of depression and a defeated attitude. We must stay at the wall that we have been positioned on at all cost. Great leaders recognize that they are part of something bigger than themselves and other people depend on their strength. This is not to say that leaders are not allowed to grieve, but as Pastor Wayne Chaney said "great leaders cry while continuing to move at the same time". Pain, change, opposition, highs, lows, and everything in between will hit us in this life, but if we are able to keep building what we were destined to, then we will realize true greatness.

The more rigid you become, the less options you have. In this day and age of change, those that are able to stay fluid will be the ones who are successful in the future. It is important to recognize that you can be flexible without sacrificing your values and beliefs. Flexibility has to do with being able to switch up methods and adapt to external dynamics. The only thing constant is change, so one will do well to embrace it rather than resist. I used to hate change (and to some degree I still do), but I realize that it is a current of life that I have no control over, plus I recognize the good that it produces. Change keeps you from becoming complacent and allows opportunities for growth. The less you resist change, the more possibilities you will be able to see, which will put you ahead of the curve as it relates to progress.

Embracing the Process of Maturity

Maturity is definitely a process that one has to decide to allow. Another way to say this is a person must decide to grow up and embrace whatever it takes for this to happen. Many people abort the process of maturity because it is painful and unfamiliar. It is easier to stay complacent at one's current level of living than to realize their full potential. We get caged in by fear and it paralyzes us. It is a scary thing to leave the cacoon that we've been in so long. We've gotten cozy in our immaturity and don't want to risk the little that we have for the greater purposes that are found outside of it. The first sign of maturity is embracing the process of becoming mature. Recognizing that you are on a path that you can't turn back from because you are being compelled by something greater is a decisive moment in a person's life. No matter what comes your way you are willing to endure because you have an innate sense that there are others depending on you to complete the process.

Staying Consistent When Progress Is Not Evident

Don't ever underestimate the amount of progress you are making when results are not physically displayed. We often want to give up when we don't reach our desired outcome in an hour. The plight of this generation is the belief that success should be seen overnight. It is more important to maintain consistent discipline when the bells, whistles, and fireworks of excitement and initial momentum wear off. For one, your character is being developed and two your sight will increase. Sight in the sense that I'm speaking on refers to long term vision. A great person can stay true to a long term vision and actually accomplish it whereas the average person can barely accomplish a short term vision. If you are able to remain consistent through the peaks, valleys, and plateus, you will be more fulfilled than many of your counterparts in the long run.A great tree does not sprout in a day. Progess is not evident for many days, but under the soil (what is unseen), the roots are growing and becoming fixed in the ground. The unseen time in our lives is what gives us a solid foundation to build on that enables us to stand in greatness throughout the rest of our lives when our time comes.

Staying Motivated In Spite of BOOBOO (Big Obstacles, Opposition, and Being Overlooked Often)

The road of greatness is not an easy one to travel. While in route, you will come across your fair share of BOOBOO (Big Obstacles, Opposition, and Being Overlooked Often). Your motivation is key to overcoming BOOBOO and not letting it hold you back from being who you are meant to be. In my own life, I have seen that the elements that have kept me motivated are my relationship with God, vision, my wife, and past accomplishments. My relationship with God keeps me on track and gives the strength to deal with BOOBOO correctly.
Man, there is nothing like having a day where BOOBOO is all over the place and then getting into the presence of Almighty Christ and letting him just wash every fear away. My relationship with God definitely gives me to strength and peace of mind to face BOOBOO.
The vision that I have gives me something to work towards. It gives me a sense of purpose and a road map for my destination. Sometimes my vision is long term and other times it is short term. But the important thing is to keep your vision in front of you. If you don't your vision will be covered by BOOBOO and will sap your motivation quickly. God empowers us through our relationship with Him to have motivation to accomplish the vision he has set before us. Yet it is your responsibility to stay attached to that vision until it is accomplished.
My wife is a huge motivator. For one, I am the provider in my home and if I don't stay motivated the ship will sink or the ship will have a large gaping hole that needs to be patched up all the time. Secondly, my wife's affirmation and belief in what I'm doing keeps me highly motivated. You may not be married, but you more than likely have someone in your life that motivates you to succeed. Cherish these people!
Lastly, my past accomplishments motivate me. I'm not saying that one should dwell on past accomplishments, but one should remember how far he/she has come. Looking at certain accomplishments of my past remind me that I have done great things and can repeat or even exceed them.

So, in order to stay motivated in spite of BOOBOO, you need to make sure to have a strong relationship with God, have a vision and keep it in front of you, find someone who motivates you, and remember past accomplishments.

Branden Nelson, the creative visionary and founder of the exciting new clothing brand F.R.E.S.H. Apparel took a little time to discuss his vision and how F.R.E.S.H. has become what it is today. We are elated to have him as our first guest on the Spotlight on Greatness Interviews. Let's get right into it.

Branden,how did you get into fashion design and how long have you been doing it?

I have always been an admirer of clothing and placing things together uniquely to look good. However I was never a fashion major, I was actually a Business major; attaining a Bachelors degree in Marketing and a Master's degree in Human Resources Management. The acronym for F.R.E.S.H. was given to me through revelation from God during a bible study that I was involved in while working in youth ministry at Antioch Church of Long Beach. At that time God gave me all of these unique characteristics that one must have in order to have a unique relationship with him and at that point I was puzzled as to what the acronym would be used for. However after praying and seeking God for direction I was told that it would be a clothing line. As I stated before I had never studied fashion before and didn't have the slightest clue as to where to begin in that industry. But I came to realize that when God is orchestrating everything, it all works out accordingly. He gave me the direction that I would start in (unique tees, sweaters and tops) but told me to remain flexible as more would become of this brand with time. So a year and some change later I have seen His words come to pass as we are maturing into a diverse clothing line not only providing our customers with classy and sophisticated spirit filled tees but are now manufacturing high end items such as jackets, dresses, red carpet couture pieces and vests. Being that my time in business and the amount of time that I have been working in fashion are both a little over one year amazes me each time I think of it. God has been good to us and has provided me with an excellent team who are able to bring His vision to fruition.

Those are some major accomplishments. I can see that there are a lot of people who support, which is critical to success. Who are some of your greatest influences in the industry?

Some of my greatest influences in the industry would have to be Chanel and Mychael Knight. Chanel because the brand has built it's foundation on not conforming to the industries standards of what beauty is and how it should look. The brand dares to be different and always pushes the envelope in regards to the styles that it introduces. I am influenced by Michael Knight because for one he is an African American man who is opening many doors for other men of color who aspire to follow in his footsteps. He is a brilliant creative mind and is able to showcase the beauty of African American people through his designs. I love how his work is reflective of him yet can be worn by many. Both brands have characteristics that I want present in my brand (non-conformity and versatility). Those are some excellent influences.

My wife loves Chanel and hopefully one day I can afford to get her something, haha.Moving on (hopefully she doesn't read this) What motivates you man and what one piece is your favorite?

Seeing people wearing my clothes and taking pride in their heart because of what the brand embodies motivates me to continue to provide my customers with even more! My favorite piece that I have worked on so far would have to be the "When I Became a Man" t-shirt. The shirt is very near and dear to my heart because it quotes a scripture (1 Corinthians 13:11) that talks about how we are to mature as believers and put away the childish things of our past in order to fully walk our paths of destiny. The shirt is designed with elementary school/pre-school writing in the beginning of the scripture; however as the scripture talks of maturity, you too see the maturity in the font that is being used. By far one of my favorites and a Classic FRESH Apparel item.

That is dope man. The font progression is a very clever idea. You seem like a have a very purpose driven life and that is reflected in your brand. With that said,what mark do you want leave on the world with your clothing line? What is your desired legacy?

As I embark on this journey, I pray to leave the world with a Quest for FRESH! That is to create a hunger and thirst for the presence of God and to have a true authentic relationship with Him. My prayer is to leave a legacy that includes raising soldiers that will always exemplify the characteristics of God and live uncompromisingly for Him in the world. Once these individuals get the FRESH fashion tip that is given by God, it is hoped that they will share it with the world. Hence taking each individual on the journey from Revelation to Transition to Commission.

You sound like a military general. We need more of that, you know, people who provide direction and sow into the lives of other people. I love that that is what you are committed to and are using your brand as a vehicle to influence the masses in that way. I can tell that you are very passionate about God and the vision he has given you. What life experience was of the most significance that caused you to pursue your passion?

I would have to say the moment when I chose to fully live for God and no longer be lukewarm in my walk with Him. Once I completely devoted my life to Christ I was propelled onto the path towards my destiny. Along the way I was provided with different tools that I needed in order to bring this vision to fruition (biblical foundations, a strong and consistent prayer life, Godly counsel, the experience of brokenness and few lessons in humility). Now that I have God as the number one in my life I can't help but be passionate about taking care of His business. Hence the characteristics described in the FRESH acronym can be summed up as "The Steps to Kingdom Building."

The pursuit for greatness is a very defining characteristic of my generation. Whether greatness is owning your own business, becoming famous, generating vast sums of wealth, coming up with medical advancements, creating social networking platforms, having 10,000+ followers on twitter, however one defines it, we are pursuing it. One thing that I have come to understand is that all great people become so because of great sacrifice. Their greatness stems from how many other people they make great in the process. If you want to be a great person you must authentically pour into the lives of other people. The abscence of this factor will never translate into greatness no matter how influential, cool, or charismatic someone is. There is a new concept that has been forming in my mind as of late. It is this, what would my life look like if it was smack dab in the middle of my purpose 24/7,365 days of the year. I think about what it would look like if every move that I made was in line with God's perfect will. Think of how powerful a person would be if he/she operated in this reality. I sincerely believe that most people only realize a small percentage of their purpose, just like most folks utilize only 10% of their brain. I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie "Limitless", whcih is about the gentleman who actually taps into 100% of his full brain power. Anyway, I'm getting off subject. The main point I'm trying to drive home is that I desire for my life to have maximum impact. I don't want to look back and realized that I only operated at 50-75% of effectiveness. I want to be so keen on how God is moving that it will pour into every area of my life. I will have maximum impact as a husband, son, brother, friend, minister, business man, musician, employee, and any other role that I find myself in. I desire to be that well polished arrow that is aimed in the correct direction, released at the precise moment, and hits its target dead center. I encourage you to develop this mindset as well.

Have you ever experienced a time in your life where you had a series of great events take place? Perhaps these events put you on a pedestal in the minds of those around you who witnessed them, but then time set in and all of those great events were memories and you looked up and you had nothing to show for it,except the glory of your not so distant pass. I believe that many people that are wired for greatness experience this. They have spurts and glimpses of greatness but they cannot maintain it for extended periods of time for one reason or another. So I started thinking, how does one live at a high level and maintain that position. I've experienced the side of spurts and glimpses of the high level life, now I am ready to transition into the consistent high life. The high level can be defined as operating at your fullest and greatest capacity. This high level of life will differ from person to person, but it is relative. Some key things that I have noticed from those who live at a high level and maintain it is (these are in no particular order):
1) They don't live off past accomplishments and great moments, they continue to move on to the next thing or improve what they already have.
2)They are highly disciplined and focused.
3)They are careful about who they allow into their inner circle. They only keep key people around them that help them become better and help keep them grounded.
4)They pour into other people, they do not hoard their successes, but share them with the village.
5)They have a strong prayer life and a strong relationship with God.
6)They remain teachable and receive continued instruction well.
7)They are very careful about what they watch, read, and entertain their thoughts with.
8)They recognize new opportunities and pursue them.
9)They live a moral lifestyle and are extremely faithful to their spouse (if they are married).
10)Their eyes are not fixed on themselves,but on God and others.

I'm realizing that I must be careful who I hang around these days. The more God reveals his purposes for my life and the more I step into that reality, the more people are drawn to me. With that said, everyone who comes around is not good for me (nor I for them). One of the hardest things to learn (especially if you are a follower of Christ) is to limit your dealings with people who want to be your friend that are not called such. Most everyone likes to be liked (accept of course Shrek and the Grinch) and its hard to turn away people who admire you and enjoy your company. But allowing relationships that are not God appointed (though they may be good people) will drain you and put weights on you as you pursue your purpose. It is an interesting dynamic to consider that even though you may have the same spiritual DNA as another person, you may not share commonalities in purpose.I'm personally getting tired of relationships that leave me confused or distraught on where I stand with people that I haven't even had a disagreement with. Issues like this are a good indicator that show this isn't a God ordained connection. You'll know the people you are joined with because there will be an ease to how you relate and even your disagreements will bring you closer.

I have a whirlwind of an attitude. The reason I say this is because I am super driven and usually when I set my will on something it is as good as done (that is unless the big man upstairs shuts me down). But my issue is that sometimes I am so driven that I leave the trail blazed behind me and people that walk with me get left in the process. I'm putting all my business out there to help those that are like me. Driven people have to learn how to pace themselves and slow down. Learn to enjoy the people that are on the journey with you and don't get angry when they don't move as quickly as you do. This is easier said than done, but it is crucial if you want to maintain meaningful and long term relationships. Learn to channel your whirlwind (because that is who you are) in the right direction and pace yourself. You will accomplish everything that you are supposed to in due time and you'll find that the accomplishments will be richer when you are able to share them with other people. Cheers!

Everyone has a passion (even if the passion is to be as passionless as possible). God has placed desires in our hearts that go beyond our surface level wants. Many times, our passion(s) catches us by surprise and we didn't even realize that we had it/them until we face some sort of life changing circumstance. Your level of passion will determine how successful you are in accomplishing your life assignment. Spend some time today and think about what really motivates you and really search yourself. Ask friends and family if you are still unsure(One thing to note, passions can and will change depending on the season of life that you are in).

I'm at a point in life now where I am realizing that no ones lane in life is the same.The time we spend trying to either be like someone else, having another person'e life, or thinking we are something we are not is just foolish and a waste of time (we waste time finding the beauty and the good in our own life). I'm starting to understand more of who I am in God (by His grace of course)and because of this I am able to be content with the lane that he designed for me. Don't get me wrong, there are some people whose lanes look really cool and that I admire. Yet at the same time I understand that that is their lane and I have my own.Instead of focusing so much on how the next man is running, I need to concentrate on my own path and make sure I finish the race God designed for me.Good stuff huh?!

Creativity in the Morning

I get a lot of my most creative thoughts at very odd times, either extremely early in the morning or very late at night. There have been many times when I have not acted upon these thoughts, I merely let them pass through my mind and then I would roll over and go back to sleep. I am starting to realize that these moments of intense inspiration are precious and should be treated as such. I have to push past my laziness/ or even justified sleep time in order to get these special invisible gems. Another thing that I am seeing is that in the early morning I am fresh and able to process creative ideas more readily as oppose to when I'm in the middle of my work day. So take advantage of the early morning, for it is then that you may find your billion dollar idea!

Finishing Well

It's easy to start something. It's hard to finish with just as much passion as you had when the endeavor began though. We get easily bored and are ready to move to the next thing. This is especially true of my generation. Finishing something takes discipline, focus,determination, and will. Sometimes we have to drop the "good" distractions in our lives that keep us from completing the projects we begin. It is important for us to master the art of finishing well because if we don't we will never reach our full potential, nor will we cultivate trust in ourselves and we will have a hard time getting others to believe in us. Stop trying to complete more than one thing at a time if you have trouble completing projects. Hone in on one area to finish by the end of the year and complete large projects one phase at a time. If you are like me and get new ideas very often that make you want to abandon what you are currently working on, just write the new idea down and come back to it later. You will develop more confidence in yourself by finishing one small thing than starting and not completing something huge.

Develop the Art of Being Vulnerable

Being vulnerable is something that goes against the fiber of our present day society. I went through my phase of being super guarded due to being hurt and taken advantage of. I didn't realize that closing myself off to people in this way to avoid further heart break would also prevent the good, other people had to offer my life as well. I am not suggesting that you totally let your guard down or intentionally let people take advantage of you. That would be stupid. What I do advise is that you allow people that show themselves to be genuine and good into your life in order to develop relationships with them. Some people get to the point where they try to live life all by themselves in isolation. This has to be one of the most unhealthiest places to be. We were created to live in community with one another. Furthermore, if you plan on doing anything great in life, it will be done through the vehicle of community. You will have to be the judge on whether or not the environment you are in allows you to be vulnerable (it needs to be a place of both physical and emotional safety). Yet don't go through life and not risk opening your life to people. Take the risk and it will make you a richer human being as a result, and that my friends is an element of greatness. Realize that people will let you down, but remember that your happiness should not come from other people, that is something that you gain on your own. The purpose of being vulnerable is allowing others to see the real you so in turn they will be more willing to be the real them.

What's up family. I'm excited to let everyone know that I am in the beginning stages of releasing a new album. For those that have been patiently waiting, I want to thank you for your continued support. I feel that I am at a place where God is beginning to allow me to express myself musically once more. He is slowly but surely opening some doors. As of right now, I have 30 written and completed songs that are potential album material. Since I want this to be my best work to date, I will write until I reach the 50 song mark and select the best from those. What's more, the very words that I speak and allow others to speak to me are also seeds being sown in my heart that will one day yield a habit. Now I am more determined to be more cautious about what I allow to enter the gates of my body and to be more proactive about planting the right stuff inside me. They say a person's true character is revealed when either great success or tragedy comes to them. Everything that they have put inside themselves and who they are is revealed in those defining moments. I want to be able to have good things flow out of me when either circumstance reveals itself.

It is my personal opinion and heartfelt conviction that we are living in a time where the masculine soul is under vigorous attack in the spiritual realm. I know that's deep. Follow me, over the years we have witnessed the downward spiral of manhood. A huge part of this problem stems from men. We must take a great portion of the blame for why we are losing our identity to street life, crime, prison, homosexuality, drugs, alcohol abuse, infidelity, greed, hatred, etc. We have given up our rights and privileges and position to the enemy and have allowed him to take over our homes, education system, churches, businesses, leisure activities, and government. The good news is, is that if we will wake up from our slumber, we have a great opportunity to change direction and get back on the path we were created for. Men, we must look ourselves in the mirror everyday and examine ourselves to see if we are still connected with our God, families, and communities. We must be brutally honest with ourselves, if we are not, we stand to lose a generation (which we are very close to). We must make the tough decisions that will lead to our healing. Only once we do this can we be reinstated back into our rightful place! Kings, Warriors, and Priests before our God, families, and communities.

As I continue to mature into adulthood,I notice that many of my peers are in pursuit of greatness, myself included. A lot of us go about it all wrong though, myself included. Greatness does not lie in how much money I have, nor how much influence I am able to flex, nor how many accomplishments I make. Greatness is found in caring about others in such a way that you put the good of others before your own. I don't mean neglect yourself or be weird and feel like you have to save all of humanity at your own expense. It's really simple, let go of your ego sometimes and be willing to serve people. Service comes in many forms. I have recently seen the profound impact of just accepting and letting other people give me advice (which I have a hard time doing). That does wonders for people, just to know that their point of view is valued. Another way of serving is allowing others to lead you even when you feel you are more qualified (or maybe just ready to get out on your own). I'm still figuring out this whole losing yourself in order to be great business. Even though it is painful to swallow my pride,it is so refreshing when I see the impact it has on other people and even to my own peace of mind.I encourage you to find and area that you can stand to lose and sky dive into this practice (let go of yourself). That is where you will find your greatness.

Life produces a series of emotions that causes us to make certain decisions. These decisions lead to outcomes that will determine our quality of life and our very destiny. Due to the dynamics of life, a person must balance many roles, responsibilities, and relationships. Some of this is pleasurable and some aspects are painful and it's not always easy keep correct perspective. In my own life, I experience many outside and internal influences vying for my time. Sometimes roles, responsibilities, and relationships get blurred. The only single element that keeps me anchored is my relationship with God. With this relationship kept in place, it makes it much easier to view other elements of life through the proper lens. I think my definition of a successful person is beginning to change. In my opinion, the person who is able to balance the responsibilities, roles, and relationships of life well,while maintaining proper perspective is the successful person.

Usually, when people begin a pursuit, our hearts are pure and motives are honorable. We simply love what we do and enjoy the pursuit. Yet as time, experience, and new circumstances mount, our pure hearts and motives dwindle and our reasons behind the pursuit are divided. This is actually quite natural. This can be both good and bad. With this said, it is a good practice to re-evaluate why we do what we do, or better yet, what are the newly developed motives behind our pursuit. Were they altered? Why were they altered? If we get to a place where we are pursuing that original something based off the incorrect principles of: hate, greed, envy, jealousy, bitterness, revenge, etc.,then we have lost our way. More times than not, life's circumstances and what we have negatively encountered from other people during the journey of our pursuit have caused us to alter our original motives. It is a fight to keep our motivations pure and we often deceive ourselves into thinking that they are what they once were. This is not to say that our original motives cannot be expanded. They can and should through wisdom, knowledge, precision, and experience. We should be able to better execute what we do as we move closer to our pursuit. I can't act like I've obtained the art of keeping my motives pure, I'm not even sure If I can. But I am in a place where I evaluate my motives, am brutally honest about them, and realign them with the correct principles that were the most prominent when I began my pursuit.

Creativity is a state of mind that always needs to be nurtured. It can blossom into something beyond your wildest imagination or wither into bitterness depending on how you care for it. In order to stay creative, one must be willing to constantly experience new things, hang around new people, and launch out into the unknown. One must also continue to fill his/her mind with fruitful information because this is food for the creative brain. We can't live free of every negative person (everyone is negative from time to time), but we can limit the amount of time we spend with such people. If you are able to do such, then do it. Continue to work on your ideas, your diligence in this will act as a creative lifeline. If you stop working on your ideas, they will began to collect dust and die all together. Us creative types get bored easily, so it is important to remember that. Instead of trying to move on to the next thing before you finish the current thing, expand upon the current and find a new way to work on it. This does two things. It keeps you focused and set to complete the current task as well as indulges your need to innovate and improve.

Have you ever had one of those moments in life where you pause and ask yourself how did I get here? When I say "here", I am speaking of your current condition in life, positive or negative, heck, maybe both. When you mentally rewind all the events that have led up to your present, did you notice a trend? I am coming to find that greatness lies in ones will to improve, perfect, learn, master, study, risk, and grow day in and day out. I'm sure there are many other words that can be added into that mix, but these stand out the strongest to me personally. Greatness means (my personal definition) that you stand out from the crowd because of a unique set of character traits and skill sets that highly influence the lives of people who you come into contact with. I believe that greatness lies in every human being, but some chose to tap into it and others forfeit it. Sometimes great circumstances thrust people into becoming great and others take it up on themselves to find it within. What type of person are you?

I often find myself so busy in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that I forget to reflect and re-evaluate how I'm progressing toward what is most important. I have discovered that life truly is a balancing act once you become an adult and there are many hats that you have to wear. It is wise to sit down somewhere quiet for about 20-45 minutes once a week or every other week (if you have A.D.D.like me, ha ha) and just think about your highest priorities. Think about how you are fairing in achieving/accomplishing what you set out for. If we are not careful, our lives will be based merely on putting out fires if we aren't proactively keeping our road map in front of us. When you take the time to reflect on "what you actually do" in your day as opposed to "what you think you do", you may find a stark contrast that reveals that you are off course. Or you may find that you are on course, but too many "other things" have gotten in the mix and they are slowing you down. Reflection allows you to make the necessary adjustments.

Many of us growing up felt the pressures of conforming to a certain code of conduct in order to fit in with a particular group. It is no different as we become adults. The same rules and regulations that turn people into mindless clones are still prevalent and the masses follow suit. I write this particular blog for people who have always stood out from the crowd. Not necessarily because they are weirdos (which I do not consider myself), but because they are just different. Perhaps you are wise beyond your years, or while everyone was playing basketball you were working on business plans, while others were busy trying to chase girls, you were reading books on how to have a long lasting and satisfying marriage. These are the types that I'm speaking to. You'll know if you are different because more than one person has said it to you numerous times. Therefore, it is important to cherish your uniqueness and not give in to the thought that you need to become someone that you are not in order to become great. It is your uniqueness that will make you great. Those that cave in from fear and hide their specialness, end up losing it and being unfulfilled in the end. Not so with you. Accept that you may not be invited to certain parties, you may be talked about, you may get looked over, you may be misunderstood, but that's okay. In the end, if you stay true to yourself and who the Creator made you to be, you'll be much happier and be able to lead the way for a generation who is the same boat that you were once in.

Ruler of Much When Faithful With Little (The Ant Principle)

A wise man once told me that the little things you do have the biggest impact in life. Doing the little things speaks of integrity and character. The grandiose things are the result of several successful little things leading up to that point. I myself procrastinate when it comes to doing the little things. Actions such as finishing up "additional" paperwork, ironing out the "little" details of a deal I'm working on, making phone calls, returning phone calls (hmmm...), picking up this little thing, and doing this little task, etc. Today I actually took the time to complete some of the little tasks that I needed to get done. And maaaaan, let me tell you, just that little bit of effort that I exerted led to some big results. Those big results are the things that I love doing, yet those results could not take place without the little ones. In honor of the NBA playoffs, I'll use a basketball analogy. It is that player that spent a little extra time after practice working on his game that shows up biggest in the actual game. Therefore we need to view the little things in our life as the preparation, practice, and foundation for our all star performance in life. I'll end this post with one of my favorite proverbs:

Many people find themselves living life according to the way other people feel they should. This leaves us depressed, unfulfilled, dependent, and weak. People will always try to define who you are in order for them to fit you into their little boxes so they can manage you better. It is up to you to paint the internal picture of who you are and stay true to it even when others try to attack and mold your person into something else. Who you are created to be is a lifelong discovery process that belongs to only you and God. There may be a select few who are chosen to embark on the journey with you, but you are the captain of the ship and their affirmation should only be confirmations of who you already know you are. If you let others define you, you are giving up the power of pursuing your own destiny. It is tough not to buy into what family members, friends, bosses, pastors, teachers, spouses, and the media say about you. But you must develop an internal strength that resolves to be all you were made to be regardless of peoples opinions.

Life is full of external circumstances that are out of our control. Yet we can control how we react to these circumstances and what we let them shape us into. Notice I said "control", we do have a great degree of power in how our lives turn out. Whether disadvantaged or privileged, black or white, tall or short, rich or poor, this is a common gift that the Almighty has blessed us with,the gift of pro activity. We can be the catalyst in our own lives that helps us to experience all life has to offer, better yet all we have to offer (potential wise). But we must make a conscience effort to be this (day in and day out). Life can be full of hardships, turmoil, pain, and suffering. Yet we do not have to be the victim of it. I personally believe and have become convinced that through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, persistence, and dedication we can all have a high quality of life. Your definition of a high quality of life may differ from mine, but that is irrelevant. As long as you are in a place where you are at peace, you have achieved the high life.

Therefore, it is up to the individual to decide to take life by the horns and produce all that they were created to produce. Indecisiveness, too much partying, lack of focus, laziness, being irresponsible, and letting others think for us will lead to deep sorrow in the long run (though it may bring temporary pleasure now). People that have the greatest joy and fulfillment are those that take active roles in charting the course for their lives (though this may bring temporary pain now).

Growth is Pain (But turns to Strength)

The benefit of the end result is what most people envision and desire. We are motivated by reaching a better quality of life mentally, physically, spiritually, financially,relationally, etc. I could go on and on. The hard truth though is that we must undergo some pain to reach greater heights. The painful process involved in realizing our potential has the wonderful affect of making us humble, appreciative, and level headed (at least it should). Growth in any area of life makes us vulnerable and this is why most people are unable to grow. They don't want to go through the humiliation, confusion, sorrow, and loneliness (sometimes) that growth requires. It is human nature to run from pain and pursue pleasure. But there is no way we can escape experiencing pain in this life. Furthermore, no one could know real pleasure without going through pain. Think of a time that you overcame a painful time in your life. Didn't it make you stronger? Doesn't it give you greater confidence knowing that you overcame? Well then, a challenge I pose to you friends (as well as myself) is to attempt to embrace pain and realize that it is a fundamental and imperative component of our growth. I know it's easier said than done. Even as I write this, I shudder to think of having to undergo more painful experiences. But in the end friends, we will be as strong and beautiful as the oak tree, able to provide shelter, wisdom, and strength to those who look up to us that are also going through their growth process.

The old saying goes "You reap what you sow". Yet many people don't want to face the consequences of what they have planted. Or they don't want to sow what is necessary for future success. To be specific, there are many young men who get girls pregnant and don't want to take on the responsibility of raising the child. Further, there are people who love to shop with borrowed money, but do not want to deal with paying their debts back. The point is, we have to get to the point where we embrace accountability for the choices we have made and deal with them, rather than waiting on others to rescue us or choosing not to deal with them all together. One sign of maturity is being willing to accept the outcome of one's actions whether good or bad. We do ourselves and others a tremendous disservice when we refuse to take ownership of our choices. Proof of this is found in all of the single mother homes, failed relationships, failed business ventures, etc. We all at some point have to Man Up and face reality. Only when we do this, can we walk a higher path that is worth being emulated by others.

New Beginnings in Long Beach

Hey Friends, just wanted to give you guys a little update on what's going on in my neck of the woods. My wife and I just relocated to the beautiful city of Long Beach. We live downtown, right in the thick of it all, which is my cup of tea. Maybe some of you have been wondering why you haven't seen a blog or tweet from me for a minute, well now you know why. We are still settling in, so my communication may be a little slower over the next couple of months, but rest assured I got plenty of ideas and new inspiration to deliver to everyone when everything comes together. This is a very exciting time for me and it feels good to be closer to my origins. With that said, thanks for the love and support. Stay tuned.

How does one stay consistently motivated? By keeping their vision in front of them. Be sure to give time to your passion on a daily basis.Don't allow your dreams to collect dust,and if they have, dust them off and get back on track. Your vision will not fulfill itself. It takes dedication and perseverance. Talk about your vision often with people whom you can trust and read books that inspire you toward your vision. If you envision who you want to be and where you want to be, you can get there. Life has an interesting way of making us lose sight of our pursuits. We get entangled with problems, worries, bills, jobs, and forget about our passion. No wonder why so many people are miserable! Don't let that happen to you. Spend at least 10 minutes a day working on your passion, increase that time once it turns into a habit. The more you let your vision consume your mind,it will feel as if the opportunities that get you closer to that vision appear more frequently. Stay with it!!

Narrow Your Focus to Achieve Maximum Results

Many people try to be a jack of all trades. The problem with this is that when you are good at several things, it is impossible to be great at any one of them. It is tempting to try to do everything yourself, perhaps you feel more productive when you juggle multiple projects at one time. But your results will be minimal if this pattern persists. To achieve maximum results you must narrow your focus, zero in on your present project, and lock in to what is necessary to do it well. It is better to complete one tasks well and then move onto your other interests once it is complete. Now if you are one of the unfortunate souls, like me, who are not in the position or have the luxury to just concentrate on one task at a time, what you can do is budget your time for the different tasks you are working on. The time that you budget to each task is only for that particular task, you don't concentrate on any other ones during that period. Using this method may cause you to take a little longer in finishing your work, but you will produce better work, which is what your goal is right?

Empower Others and Increase Your Influence.

The best leaders are those that empower those that follow to become leaders themselves. True leaders want those that follow them to become independent so that the leader is no longer needed by them. Not that the main leader loses his/her value, but they have raised their followers to fly on their own and to teach others to do the same. That is the mark of great leadership. Leadership is not about hoarding power or making others submit to you. It is about casting vision, leading by example, and producing lasting results. A position or title does not make you or I a leader,influence does. Influence must be earned by demonstrating skill,integrity, reliability, and strength in your day to day activities. You must first be granted permission to influence those you seek to influence (even if you've been given a position over them).

Most people set new year resolutions at the beginning of each year but fail to follow through with them. Why is this? Most of the time it is because we don't see quick results and we lose interest. It's as if something magical is supposed to happen just because we make the resolution. The truth is, these new goals that we set require hard and continuous work and we may not even see the fruit of our efforts in the year we have set the goal. If you want to be a better business person, athlete, husband, wife, and overall person, you must sacrifice the time, energy, finances, brain power, and self to do so. Your labor will be rewarded, but maybe not in the time you would like it to be. Be diligent and lock onto your future rather than your bleak today. And don't wait until the clock strikes 12 and the ball drops for 2010 either. Start today. Map out your plan for how you are going to achieve greatness in the areas you are seeking it in. Include trusted friends and family in your plans so they can hold you accountable and encourage you. I personally am looking forward to becoming stronger and wiser; spiritually, physically, relationally, financially, and mentally and I started on this journey about a week ago. Adapt to Change Quicker to Become More Powerful

There is no way around it, change is inevitable. Rather than try to resist this insurmountable force, the wise learn to embrace it and use it to their advantage. People that get locked into routine and who are unwilling to change are close to the graveyard, while those that adapt to their surroundings and circumstances end up flourishing. Nothing was ever meant to remain the same, except the Almighty, and those who understand this run circles around those who don't. If you become dogmatic in your outlook on life, you won't be able to survive the bad changes that come your way, nor benefit from the good ones. If you let it, change helps you become more agile, wiser, quicker, and stronger. Treat life as a judo master does his opponent, use its own momentum against it rather than exerting your own force against it. As you prepare to embrace change, be sure to keep your values and priorities in front of you (life may change, but these don't have to and if they do, perhaps you weren't that committed in the first place). Know where you want to go and have a plan for how you will get there, but be flexible enough to adjust your plan if a change occurs (it most certainly will). Don't fall in love with the plan, fall in love with the destination, and even still, allow room for a mental shift of thinking if the destination presents itself as unattainable given your current circumstances (then make plans to help create better circumstances that will help you reach that destination another way).

Humility Before Honor

Yes, you are gifted, talented, and brilliant! Yet for the greatness inside of you to shine at its fullest potential, you have to go through the process of humility. What separates the talented from the great is character. You earn character by working hard, experiencing hardships while maintaining proper perspective, and being willing to follow (even when you don't like the leadership). The process of humility is not supposed to feel good (just as lifting more weights at the gym does not), but you will find that those that allow themselves to go through it have a much more balanced and healthy perspective(along with more mental fortitude). People tend to develop big heads naturally when they garner success (no way around this), yet the big head can be tempered by humility. Humility will help you make correct choices and prove a valuable asset when you reach greater heights. Humility gives you boundaries that keep you safe and it helps you to remain on those heights without falling. Honor will come (just continue to work hard), but for it to last, it must be coupled with humility.

Use Doubters To Your Advantage

People that doubt your abilities can cause you to do one of two things, either make you quit or push yourself to success. Chances are that you prefer the latter to occur. Doubters help you to create positive momentum if you channel your energy the proper way. I am not suggesting that your sole purpose becomes proving your doubters wrong, but rather using them to help you focus even more on what you are already pursuing. No other human being should have the power to control your destiny, but you can utilize their energy to propel you to it. Proving doubters wrong should never be your main objective, only the cherry on top of the cake at best. Your main objective is to realize all of your potential before you leave this earth, doubters are stepping stones that help you climb to that realization. Doubters keep you on your toes, keep you humble, and help you to continue to work hard. I personally love them because they present me with a challenge to conquer. If I prove to others that I am able to accomplish something, that further solidifies that knowledge that I already believed about myself beforehand, which makes me even more confident to pursue my goals. Don't become vengeful when using doubters to your advantage, think of the process as a game and have fun with it so you maintain a healthy perspective.

Life is a complex phenomena. Even the best strategist cannot see every variation that it will present. The successful are those who put a plan in place to get to their final destination as well as calculate how to get there, watch for possible detours and obstructions, and develop exit plans. People who just let life happen to them will never be successful in their endeavors. They will wake up one morning and their reality will hit them like a ton of bricks. They have created a mountain of negative momentum that will be very hard to get past (though it is possible). Make up your mind today to set specific goals on who you want to become in the future and be honest about what it will take to accomplish that. Cushion the blow of devastating setbacks by preparing in advance for them. Those who have a plan for their life and know where they are heading have more power over life than those who do not have such a plan and no direction.

50 Cent Vs. Jay-Z (Who would Win)

This particular blog post is inspired by the brewing feud between Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. These two men are not only heavyweights in music, but in the business world period. Both have graced the covers and been mentioned in influential business publications such as Forbes, Fortune, and Black Enterprise. The possibility of a "battle" between these two moguls is an interesting and relevant discussion for the business world to have due to, in my opinion, that these men represent a battle between private and public companies.
In one corner of the ring, there is Shawn Carter, with an estimated 900 million dollar net worth, according to him, he runs and owns 16 different companies including holdings in the New Jersey Nets, a night club, hotels, and a world renowned clothing line. In addition he is considered one of the best, if not the best emcee, perhaps musician of our time. In my opinion he represents the public conglomerate companies. I get the feeling that he is a figure head for a massive movement that has been around longer than he has. There are perhaps people way more powerful than him behind the scenes that have a superbly large vested interest in Shawn's success and that is partially the reason why Jay has enjoyed as much success as he has. There you have it, the investor owned brand Jay-Z.
On the other side of the ring, you have 50 Cent, the bionic business machine with an estimated 400 million dollar net worth. Curtis Jackson has diversified his brand into clothing, film, beverages, books, and a social networking site that rivals myspace and facebook. 50 Cent has thrived off a career of warfare from the block to the boardroom and his presence is felt in all of music. He is self made, plays by his own rules, and is accountable pretty much only to himself (maybe Jimmy Lovine too). With that said, he is the representation of the private company with as much power as the public companies. Part of the reason he is just as powerful as the public players is that he has a severe competitive advantage. His business acumen and strategic mind is unparalleled, plus you get the impression that this guy does not sleep.
There you have it, the two biggest giants in the hip hop business world. Who do you think will win if the guns come out the holsters? 50 Cent himself said that if battle were to occur between these two, one of them probably one not survive it. Whether he is talking about it being career ending or life ending, I'm not sure. I think he meant both because the stakes would be so high if these two titans clashed. Let me know your thoughts.

Positioning Yourself for Greatness

Our lives are designed for a specific moment in time where all of the training we have undergone will be called upon to be used. This is the time where we are at our finest and our greatness is revealed. But we must live a life of preparation in order not to miss this most important time in our lives. You never know exactly when this time will arrive, though there are events that occur beforehand that show signs that we are near it. If you fail to prepare in advance, you will not be able to meet the demand that your training would have equipped to handle. Everyday that you wake up is an opportunity to become the person that future circumstances require you to be. You must develop the self discipline to prepare for that future event that will define your life long after you leave this earth. The books you read, the experiences you encounter, the relationships you develop, the failures and triumphs you experience, and choices you make all tie together and determine whether or not you will succeed once your defining moment comes upon you. Therefore it is wise to have a mind to position yourself in advance so that when destiny reveals itself, you will already be in place to fulfill it.
